Here’s yet another reminder that we have world-class artists here in Rochester. Wendell Castle and Albert Paley are sharing the Smithsonian Craft Show’s inaugural Visionary Award.

They will receive the award at a dinner in Washington, D.C., on April 9, the day before the show opens. The award was created to honor those artists who “have risen to the pinnacle of sculptural arts and design.” They must have works in major museums and, well, be visionary in their mediums.

Castle and Paley have works in more than 100 museums worldwide.

The two artists also will participate in a conversation about their art on April 14 in the National Building Museum auditorium.

Castle, of Scottsville, makes beautiful furniture, Paley, of Rochester, sculptures large and small (even some that can fit in your living room, mixed with Castle’s works).

They were both together last year as well, each receiving an Eastman Medal from University of Rochester on the grounds of the new Memorial Art Gallery Centennial Sculpture Park, which includes art made by each of them.
